Retina Associates of Florida
Dr. Ivan J. Suñer and Dr. Marc C. Peden provide world-class retina and ocular oncology care in the Tampa Bay Area. They have been recognized as “Best Doctors” by their peers for the last 10 years. Both Dr. Suñer and Dr. Peden were in academic practice before they sought to provide cutting-edge retina care in a private practice setting.
Dr. Suñer is originally from Puerto Rico. He graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University and with Honors from Yale University School of Medicine. He performed his ophthalmology and retina training at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. He is also a Veteran of the United States Air Force, where he served as an ophthalmologist and received the “Distinguished Graduate” honor from Officer Training School and received the “Meritorious Service” Medal. He was a professor at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami and at Duke University, where he received the “Professor of the Year” Award on 5 occasions. He joined RAF in 2009.
Dr. Peden is a native Floridian from Jacksonville. He earned his undergraduate and medical degrees with high honors from the University of Florida. He then undertook ophthalmology residency and retina fellowship training at the University of Florida. He was a professor at University of Florida in Gainesville and director of the Retina Service. He also earned “Professor of the Year” accolades on several occasions for his skills and mentorship in training the next generation of ophthalmologists and retina specialists. Dr. Peden joined RAF in 2012.
Dr. Suñer and Dr. Peden joined Retina Associates of Florida to provide the same quality, cutting-edge care they provided in their academic positions, but with a customer-service and patient-centered focus. They are also involved in exciting trials bringing novel therapies for macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment, retinal vascular diseases, genetic retinal diseases, and eye tumors.
They both lecture extensively in important international meetings such as the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Retina Specialists, Retina Society, and Macula Society, as well as provide education to their colleagues across the United States through industry-sponsored programs. They have published over 60 articles in major journals.
Dr. Suñer has two college-age children, Ivan Patrick and Isabel. He and his wife, Elise, enjoy Rays baseball, Lightning hockey, cooking together, and spoiling their cats, Reggie and Milo.
Dr. Peden has three school-age daughters, Elena, Marissa, and Lilia, with his wife, Carmen. They have a pet dog, Elvis. They enjoy Gator football, fishing, and family and church activities.
