Moffitt Cancer Center

Dr. Fleming arrived in Tampa in 2017 after being recruited from MD Anderson Cancer Center to join H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center.  The move from Houston to Tampa was prompted by an exciting opportunity to lead the Department of Gastrointestinal (GI) Oncology at Moffitt. The Department is one of the largest at Moffit and treats patients with any cancer of the gastrointestinal tract. Under Dr. Fleming’s leadership, the Department has rapidly developed into a clinical and research leader in the field of gastrointestinal cancer treatment.

Born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee, Dr. Fleming received his medical degree at the University of Tennessee Center of Health Science and trained in surgery and surgical oncology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, where he later served as Professor of surgical oncology, Chief of pancreas surgery, and Executive Director of perioperative services.

For the last 20 years Dr. Fleming has dedicated his professional career to improving the survival of patients with pancreatic cancer: a lethal malignancy that remains an unsolved health care dilemma. Dr. Fleming performs advanced surgical procedures to remove pancreatic cancer and other gastrointestinal malignancies. He has been recognized as a Castle Connolly Top Doctor since 2013, has been included in the Consumer Research Council of America Guide to America’s Top Surgeons since 2012, and the Best Doctors in America, Best Doctors List since 2019.  In research, Dr. Fleming has published nearly 300 peer-reviewed research articles and 21 book chapters and has received research funding from the National Institute of Health, the Department of Defense, the American Cancer Society, and many other funding agencies.

Outside of work, Dr. Fleming achieves balance in his life by spending time with his family and friends while cheering on the Lightning!
