Happy Summer Tampa! The grass is greener, the sun is brighter, and the days are longer. Yes, spring in Tampa is in full bloom, and the warmer weather has us spending our days outside. From baseball games to movies in the park, we spent April enjoying fun, outdoor events. Here’s what had us happily springing forward during the past month–in case you missed it.
Festivals of Speed in St. Petersburg kicked off the month of April with an impressive display of luxury cars and motorsport vehicles that was no laughing matter. The festival weekend, which took place in Vinoy Park, began with a luxury cocktail reception on Friday, April 1st from 8-11 pm. Over 600 guests circulated under the tent and enjoyed jazz music, fine cars, and flowing libations. The weekend culminated in the Display of Exotics on Sunday, April 3rd from 10 am to 4 pm. Thousands of attendees from all over Central Florida came to enjoy these rare and vintage vehicles.
Fans flocked to Tropicana Field for the Tampa Bay Rays home opener against the Blue Jays on Opening Day of the 2016 Major League Baseball season. Sunday, April 3rd marked the start of the season, but unfortunately, the Rays could not capitalize on the excitement. They fell short to the Blue Jays, having committed too many errors to overcome last year’s AL East winner.
On April 5th, Humans of New York creator and photographer Brandon Stanton delivered a lecture at USF as part of its University Lecture Series. Stanton discussed the evolution of his blog from a photography project that he started in November 2010 with the aim of detailing “New York City, one story at a time” to the fastest growing Arts & Humanities page on Facebook with over 17 million likes. The HONY blog, itself, has 14 million followers, a statistic that does not consider the thousands of reblogs and shares each post garners.
Warmer evening temperatures during the month provided perfect conditions for enjoying cinema under the stars. Tampa’s Water Works Park presented the season’s first outdoor movie screenings with its event Screen on the Green. The event ran for three Saturdays in April, featuring Disney films Big Hero 6, Jumanji, and Dolphin Tale 2. Attendees enjoyed food from local food trucks while kids cooled down in splash pads at the park.
From April 10th-17th, Foodies from throughout Florida indulged their epicurean desires at Bern’s Winefest, the 19th such event hosted by Bern’s Steakhouse. Tickets, per usual, were quick to sell out.
