Originally from Charleston, West Virginia, Jonathan attended West Virginia Wesleyan College before transferring to West Virginia University, where he earned his B.A. in Multi-Disciplinary Studies. Working summers in the coal fields alongside his father instilled in him a lifelong appreciation for hard work and integrity.
He earned his J.D. from Stetson University College of Law in 2010, where he was named a Florida Bar Public Service Fellow and served as vice-president of the American Association for Justice. During law school, he interned at the Hillsborough County Public Defender’s Office, the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office (Gang and Domestic Violence Units), and the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Tampa.
Jonathan began his legal career at the Pinellas County Public Defender’s Office, where he tried over 25 jury trials and handled more than 1,000 cases. He later worked at Cole, Scott & Kissane before launching Hackworth Law in 2013, where he focuses on personalized, results-driven legal advocacy.
He has been consistently recognized by Super Lawyers (2024–2025), named to Top 30 Under 30 by the Tampa Bay Business Journal, and listed among the Top 40 Under 40 by the National Trial Lawyers. He has also received Martindale-Hubbell’s Platinum and Gold Client Champion Awards and Avvo’s Client’s Choice Award.
In addition to his legal work, Jonathan is a proud Tampa Rough Rider, actively involved in community outreach. One of his most heartfelt initiatives is ensuring that every adopted child in Hillsborough County receives a teddy bear—a small gift with a big impact.
