Originally from Colorado, Dr. Meader graduated from Colorado State University with a degree in biology and microbiology and then atteded medical school at Saint Louis University School of Medicine. Following medical school, he completed an internship in general surgery at St Louis University Hospital.
After internship, he decided to take a slightly different path and joined the US Navy to pursue an interest in diving and hyperbaric medicine and went thru Navy dive school in Panama City FL to become a diving medical officer. On active duty for 3 years, he attained the rank of Lt Commander, serving as squadron medical officer for Submarine Squadron Twenty in Kings Bay Georgia. Following his tour of active duty he remained in the Naval Reserves for 5 yrs as the diving medical officer for Mobile Diving Salvage Unit Two at Mayport NAS, Jacksonville FL.
After his time in the Navy, Dr. Meader completed his residency in diagnostic radiology at University of Florida in Gainesville FL where in his final year he was elected chief resident. He stayed at University of Florida to do a fellowship in interventional radiology and remained at University of Florida as faculty accepting a position as assistant professor of radiology in the interventional department where he practiced for 3 years.
When an opportunity to move to Tampa presented itself 13 years ago, to work with the guys at Tampa General Hospital, he accepted it immediately and has been with the group ever since. “Tampa has always been my favorite city in Florida. It has so much to offer and having the chance to work with this group of highly skilled and amazing partners was something I couldn’t pass up! The past 13 years have truly been a pleasure, working with this group and at TGH.”
Florida Interventional Specialists is a busy tertiary level practice performing around 8000 interventional procedures per year at TGH. The group focuses on image guided, minimally invasive, surgical procedures for the treatment of various dieases ranging from vascular disease, cancer treatment for liver, renal and other cancers, treatment of uterine fibroids, benign prostatic hypertrophy(BPH), and acute spinal compression fractures, as well as an array of dialysis and vascular access procedures and more.
In addition to a busy clinical practice, Dr. Meader and his partners in FIS are actively involved in research and teaching as faculty for the University of South Florida running an ACGME accredited residency in interventional radiology training 2 residents per year over a 6 year residency. All of the faculty conduct and publish research and present at national meetings throughout the year. “Teaching the residents is the best part of the job for me” states Dr Meader. “It keeps your skills and knowledge sharp and up to date.”
In his spare time, Dr. Meader enjoys skiing, live music and traveling to pursue his other passion, landscape photography which he says provides a needed break from the hectic pace of a busy medical practice.
