Equine Veterinarian
Dr. Mark Piecoro has dedicated his life to equine veterinary medicine, a passion that began in his hometown of Lexington, KY. At just 14 years old, he was grooming Standardbred racehorses at the historic Red Mile—an experience that sparked his desire to pursue a career in veterinary care. His academic journey began with a baseball scholarship to Enterprise State Jr. College, where he earned an Associate in Arts degree, followed by a B.S. in Animal Science from Berry College in Rome, GA.
Before attending veterinary school, Dr. Piecoro worked as a research assistant at the University of Kentucky’s Gluck Equine Research Center, contributing to groundbreaking studies on Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis (EPM). He then earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Auburn University in 2000. His expertise was further honed through an externship at the prestigious Dubai Equine Hospital, where he assisted in the examination, treatment, and surgical care of elite equine athletes while helping oversee Arabian endurance and Thoroughbred races.
Dr. Piecoro’s career took him to Miami, Florida, where he joined Burch and Burch, a renowned Thoroughbred racetrack practice serving Hialeah, Calder, and Gulfstream Park. After two years, he launched his own practice, working extensively in Kentucky, Florida, and New York. From 2003 to 2009, he served as an examining veterinarian at Belmont and Saratoga Racetracks, and since 2004, he has been a key veterinary presence at Tampa Bay Downs during the winter season. More recently, he has expanded his practice to include Saddlebred, Morgan, Hackney, and Dutch Harness horses.
With over two decades of experience in racetrack medicine, Dr. Piecoro’s primary professional focus is lameness. When he’s not caring for horses, he enjoys fishing, golfing, and traveling—embracing the same energy and passion that define his veterinary career.
