USF Emergency Medicine
Dr. James P. Gillen currently holds the position of Director of Emergency Medicine Education and chairman of the Clinical Competency Committee for the USF Emergency Medicine Residency Program at Tampa General Hospital. Recently, Dr. Gillen was appointed Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at the USF Morsani College of Medicine. Board certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine for the past 38 years, Dr Gillen continues to practice emergency medicine full-time at Tampa General Hospital. His primary academic focus is the development and education of the 30 USF Emergency Medicine residents currently training at Tampa General Hospital. Throughout his academic career, he has helped train more than 250 board-certified emergency physicians.
Dr. Gillen also serves on the board of directors of “The Phoenix- Tampa”, an organization dedicated to people in early recovery living in the greater Tampa Bay area.
Dr. Gillen has four children: Jake, Lindsey, Whitney and Kirk.
Jake, an acute care surgeon, and his wife Natalie, a urogynecologist, both practice at Carilion Clinic, residing in Roanoke with their two children, Isla and Harrison.
Lindsey Kovach, the eldest daughter, is a successful realtor living in Greenville, SC with husband Kyle, a teacher, and their three children, Gwen, Livi, and Cam.
Whitney O’Brian, the youngest daughter, is a board-certified optometrist also practicing in Greenville where she lives with husband Brandon, an instrument-rated pilot.
Kirk is an interventional radiologist at the VA Medical Center in Charleston, SC. Kirk’s wife, Megan, is a registered nurse at MUSC medical center, both living in the house where Megan grew up on James Island.
Dr. Gillen’s wife, Marlene Gillen is a cardiology nurse practitioner at Tampa General Hospital. Together, Marlene and Jim have a combined 45 years of service at Tampa General. They are both dedicated dog-lovers and live with their pups, Jack and Rosie.
