Dr. Derek Gonzalez is a fellowship-trained spine surgeon specializing in complex spinal disorders in both adults and children with Florida Medical Clinic Orlando Health Orthopedics. A native of Tampa, Florida, Dr. Gonzalez earned his medical degree with high honors from Florida International University’s Wertheim College of Medicine. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society and served as Chief Resident. Dr. Gonzalez has received advanced training at renowned institutions, including Harvard Medical School’s Boston Children’s Hospital, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and Shock Trauma Hospital.
After his residency, Dr. Gonzalez completed a fellowship in complex spine surgery at the University of Miami’s Jackson Memorial Hospital, one of the top spine fellowships in the country. He is passionate about creating personalized treatment plans, focusing on conservative options before recommending surgery. When surgery is necessary, Dr. Gonzalez uses minimally invasive techniques to reduce pain, speed recovery, and improve function.
As the official team physician of the Tampa Bay Lightning since 2002, Dr. Gonzalez and his colleagues have provided care for sports-related injuries and recovery strategies.
