Radiologist
Dr. Barnes grew up in rural South Dakota. On a scholarship, he attended Yankton College, where he graduated Cum Laude with a major in Biology. During his undergraduate years, he was highly active, playing trumpet in the stage band, participating in theater, and becoming the only athlete in Yankton College history to earn 12 varsity letters in football, wrestling, and baseball. He went on to graduate from the University of South Dakota’s School of Medicine and completed his residency in Radiology at Rhode Island Hospital.
Dr. Barnes then moved his family to Lakeland, FL, where he began his 33-year career in radiology. He served as Chief of Radiology at Lakeland Regional Medical Center for two years, at Winter Haven Hospital for four years, and at Shands Hospital in Lake City for five years. In Lake City, he managed radiology services across three small hospitals in North Florida.
As a diagnostic radiologist, Dr. Barnes specialized in interpreting x-rays, CTs, MRIs, and ultrasounds. He also performed minimally invasive procedures, including image-guided biopsies and fluid drainage for conditions such as abscesses and pleural effusions. For much of his career, he read mammograms and performed breast biopsies using stereotactic and ultrasound guidance.
Now partially retired, Dr. Barnes lives on a small farm in Plant City with his wife, close to their children and grandchildren.
In recent years, Dr. Barnes has focused his interests on longevity, dedicating himself to learning about fitness and nutrition. He believes that much of the nutrition we were taught growing up is not as healthy as once thought. He predicts that in the coming years, mainstream medicine will shift its focus from treatment to prevention, particularly through dietary changes.
